The 36 tattvas are the principles through which non-dual Śaiva Tantra describes how one infinite Consciousness unfolds into the full spectrum of manifest reality. This cosmology gives us a foundation for understanding both the Tantric view of reality and its path to liberation.

Why Study the Tattvas?

Swami Lakshmanjoo, the last in an unbroken chain of masters of the oral tradition of Kashmir Śaivism, called the 36 tattvas “the most important points for entering in Shaivism.”

There is a reason for that. The tattvas provide the context for understanding the teachings of non-dual Śaiva Tantra. Texts such as the Śiva Sūtras, the Pratyabhijñāhṛdayam, and the works of Abhinavagupta emerge from a worldview in which these principles of reality are already part of the philosophical ground. When you understand the tattvas, you have a context for understanding what these teachings are pointing to and how their different ideas fit within the larger Tantric vision.

The tattvas also give context to practice. They allow us to see where a particular practice is situated within the larger cosmology—what level of reality it engages and how it relates to the larger aim of liberation. In this sense, the tattvas become an orienting framework for both study and practice.

The Body as a Living Map

A central principle of Tantra is that the human being is a microcosm of the larger cosmos: the same principles of reality expressed in the cosmos can also be located within the body.

Scholar Gavin Flood uses the term entextualization to describe the Tantric process of inscribing a tradition’s cosmology into the subtle body through practice—so that, as he puts it, “the body becomes the text.”

In this immersion, we will work with the tattvas in this embodied way. Through meditation, contemplation, visualization, and other practices, we will locate and experience these 36 principles of reality within the subtle body. In this way, Tantric cosmology becomes a living map that we can access through practice and use in the service of recognition and liberation.

Immersion Format

The immersion will be a two-part course consisting of sixteen live two-hour classes: eight in the spring and eight in the fall. Each part will follow a rhythm of two consecutive weeks of classes followed by an integration week. 

The time between classes will allow you to practice, integrate what you are learning into daily life, and return to each session with your own experience to draw from. It also allows for a substantial course of study without overwhelming the rest of your life.

Between the spring and fall sessions, we will have an extended period for personal practice and integration, with additional opportunities to come together for guided practice.

Because this is designed as a live cohort experience, regular live attendance is expected. The conversations, questions, reflections, and shared inquiry that happen within the group are an important part of the learning process. This is not intended to be a recordings-only course.

Participants will also have access to a private online portal with class recordings, course materials, guided practices, and other resources, along with a private discussion space for questions, reflections, and connection between sessions.

Final dates, schedule, tuition, and course structure will be shared with those on the interest list before enrollment opens.
